Record turnout for Shrewsbury’s ‘See, Hear, Remember’ Information Day
This ground-breaking event, now in its fourth year, works as a “one stop shop” for people, their families and their carers - breaking down barriers and enabling them to navigate disparate services that sometimes feel over-complicated and disconnected.
Originally created by Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry, the See, Hear, Remember information day has tripled in size over the years, and is now a partnership between Radfield Home Care, Sight Loss Shropshire and Community Resource as well as being sponsored by Ethical Workforce and U3A Shrewsbury.
Organisations at the event included AGE UK, the Alzheimer’s Society, Shropshire Council, the NHS, Armed Forces Outreach and many more.
Feedback from people attending the event was very positive. One attendee said: “I came to find out more about what is available for people with dementia. My father was recently diagnosed so I wanted to know what life might be like for us all in the years ahead. It was brilliant to talk to experts in all kinds of things.”
Another attendee was equally enthusiastic. “I get so frustrated trying to get information about care for my wife who has vascular dementia and vision loss, but the See, Hear, Remember day meant that I got all I needed within an hour or two of visiting. And all the people were lovely!”
Stall holders were grateful for the opportunity to meet people face-to-face to explain their services. They also appreciated networking with other services at the event. Emma Wilde Interim Head of Wellbeing & Friendship Services, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “Another fantastically organised and well attended event. We spoke to so many people about the support they can receive from us but signposted to many partners … for me this is the best event in the calendar!”
Les Wilkinson, from Dementia Action Alliance, added: “The day was a resounding success, people were not just browsing, they were making enquiries, seeking advice and generally going away with information, direction or comfort which will help enormously with the journey they're on.”
Karen Corcoran, Regional Operations Manager, for Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry said: “We set up this event four years ago to make it easier for people, who have sometimes reached crisis point, to get the information and the support they needed in one place. Seeing the Information Day grow and develop is testament to the fact that it was desperately needed. It was so wonderful to see so many people getting tailored information and help that will truly make a difference in their lives.”
