Mrs C has a longstanding love of owls, with pictures and ornaments of them displayed throughout her home. After getting to know Mrs C and seeing just how much they meant to her, Care Professional Sian decided to arrange something she hoped would be particularly memorable – the chance to meet a real owl.

With the help of Amanda from Harrogate Bird of Prey and Creature Cave, Luna paid Mrs C a surprise visit, allowing her to see and meet the owl up close.

The reaction made the effort more than worthwhile, with smiles and tears of joy during what Sian described as a “magical” experience.

Sian said:

“Mrs C absolutely loves owls. She has pictures and ornaments of them all around her home, so it’s something you quickly notice when you spend time with her.

“I thought how lovely it would be if we could somehow arrange for her to actually meet one. Amanda was kind enough to make that happen and seeing Mrs C’s reaction when Luna arrived was just wonderful.

“There were smiles and happy tears all round. It was such a special moment and one I think we’ll all remember for a long time.”

Liz, Field Care Supervisor at Radfield Home Care, was also present for the visit and said the surprise demonstrated the relationships that can develop between Care Professionals and the people they support.

She said:

“Sian had taken the time to really get to know Mrs C and recognise something that would mean a lot to her. That’s such an important part of good home care.

“It isn’t only about the practical support someone needs. We want people to continue enjoying the things they love and to have moments and experiences that bring genuine happiness.”

Photographs were taken during the visit, with printed copies given to Mrs C to treasure and share with her family.

The Radfield team also thanked Amanda from Harrogate Bird of Prey and Creature Cave for giving her time and helping to make the surprise possible. For the Radfield team, getting to know the person behind the care is a fundamental part of providing that support – whether that means understanding their routines and preferences or, occasionally, arranging a surprise visit from their favourite animal.
