Making Dreams a Reality: John’s First Outing in Three Years
Living in a rural cottage near his family’s farm, John had spent decades working the land. However, due to mobility issues and the uneven, narrow country roads surrounding his home, he was unable to leave the house. When his sister passed away, he desperately wanted to attend her funeral, but the journey seemed impossible.
That’s when Eden Country Care, a home care provider based in Penrith, stepped in. Recognising how important it was for John to attend the service; the team devised a plan to make it happen. Getting John to the nearby chapel required careful planning and coordination. One carer guided from the front, ensuring they stayed on even surfaces, while another pushed his wheelchair from behind. It wasn’t easy, but with teamwork and determination, they made it possible for John to be there with his family.
“Our office staff didn’t hesitate to offer their time to support this special outing,” one of the managers at Eden Country Care shared. “Everyone was willing to do whatever it took to help John attend his sister’s funeral.”
Sitting at the front of the chapel with his family and friends, John’s humour shone through despite the solemn occasion. About 15 minutes into the service, he waved to the carers who had accompanied him. Concerned that he needed assistance, they rushed over to help, only to be met with John’s cheeky grin. “I didn’t need anything,” he said with a wink. “Just wanted to make sure you were paying attention!”
Following this successful outing, John’s confidence grew. He soon asked if it would be possible to visit his family farm, which he hadn’t seen in years. The Eden Country Care team was more than happy to make it happen. His nephew gave him a wonderful tour of the farm, including a stop at “Fabi's Fabulous Milk” shed, where the family now sells delicious milkshakes and other fresh products. The visit brought back a flood of memories for John, reconnecting him with his past and the farm that had been such a big part of his life.
“It was amazing to see Dad out and about again,” John’s daughter shared. “The care team at Eden Country Care has been incredible, giving him the support he needs to enjoy the things he used to love. It’s like a whole new world has opened up for him.”
John has already planned his next outing with the team. Though he’s enjoying his new adventures, he’s still making good use of his time at home, keeping busy with crafts like rag rugging. He’s even making a rug for one of his carers’ dogs!
For John, these outings have been nothing short of life-changing, and it’s all thanks to the dedicated team at Eden Country Care, who go the extra mile to make dreams a reality.
