Golden Cinema Brings Connection, Comfort, and Community

Recognising that loneliness and social isolation can be just as challenging as physical health concerns, the Right at Home team took a bold and compassionate step in launching the Golden Cinema.
Held across three welcoming, accessible venues — Waddington Social Club, Whalley Old Grammar School, and The Grand in Clitheroe — the Golden Cinema provides more than just entertainment. It offers a lifeline of connection, inclusion, and joy to those who may be feeling the emotional toll of living alone or experiencing a lack of social engagement.
Each session features a classic or feel-good film, carefully selected with audience preferences in mind. Attendees are greeted with a warm smile by organiser Lisa Tomlinson, Business Development and Community Engagement Executive at Right at Home East Lancs. Guests are treated to a true cinema experience — complete with tea, coffee, biscuits, and even popcorn — all completely free of charge.
What makes the Golden Cinema stand out is its atmosphere of warmth, acceptance, and community spirit. Many attendees, including long-time visitor Lyndsay M, describe it as a highlight of the month.
“My mum and I have been attending Right at Home East Lancashire's monthly screenings for over a year now. We usually go to Waddington, but we’ve also enjoyed visits to Whalley and Clitheroe. Lisa, who runs the events, always makes us feel so welcome. She puts such thought into everything – from the choice of films to the refreshments. It's more than a cinema; it's a place where friendships are formed and conversations flow. We’re so grateful for this initiative.”
In a time where many older adults face shrinking social circles and reduced opportunities for engagement, the Golden Cinema has created a dependable, uplifting space to reconnect with others and feel part of something bigger.
Lisa Tomlinson, the driving force behind the initiative, reflected on its impact:
“The Golden Cinema began as a simple idea — to bring people together through something we all enjoy: films. But it’s grown into so much more. It’s become a community in its own right. I’ve seen attendees forge genuine friendships, find renewed confidence, and even look forward to outings again. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, and I’m excited to keep growing this project in the months and years ahead.”
Right at Home East Lancashire is committed to expanding and evolving the Golden Cinema, and welcomes suggestions from attendees to make the experience even more enjoyable and accessible.
Whether you’re an older adult, a carer, or simply someone looking for a welcoming social activity to share with a loved one, the Golden Cinema offers a heartwarming and enriching experience — all at no cost.
