In early 2024, the Guardian Homecare Ormskirk team took over the management of an extra care scheme that had seen a noticeable decline in community spirit, largely due to the closure of its once-thriving Bistro.

Upon arrival, it was clear that the sense of connection among residents had faded. Recognising the importance of social engagement, Branch Manager Jackie Lowe introduced a simple yet effective initiative - free tea, coffee, and biscuits in a communal space. This quickly became a daily social highlight, fondly dubbed “The Luncheon Club” by residents.

What began as a small act of kindness has since evolved into a vibrant hub of activity. The Luncheon Club now works closely with a newly formed residents’ committee, helping to shape a welcoming and inclusive environment. Monthly celebration nights, supported trips to places like Blackpool and Bury Market, and weekly quiz afternoons have significantly enhanced the residents’ quality of life.

The transformation has been profound. Feedback from service users, residents, and their families speaks volumes, with many describing the change as "like night and day." The renewed sense of community has not only improved morale but also helped rebuild trust in the care provided.

We continue to pride ourselves on delivering a consistently high standard of care, which is reflected in the steadily increasing care hours now required. Our holistic approach - blending quality care with a rich social calendar – ensures residents feel supported, engaged, and most importantly, at home.

Jackie Lowe in a statement says "I'm proud of what we've achieved at Brookside. Every activity, every bit of care, every chat over a cup of tea is about helping people feel listened to, valued and part of something. It is a privilege to know that the residents feel included and part of a genuine community." Brookside isn't just about ticking off care calls. It's a place alive with community and connection. From Knit & Natter and film clubs to summer fairs and shared lunches, CCH has turned neighbours into friends and given people a true sense of belonging.

Brookside residents committee have made a statement " Since CCH took over, Brookside feels alive. The luncheon club is full, the garden is being used again, and the neighbours look out for one another. People are staying in their own homes with the right support. That is what we wanted for our community." With CCH, the community thrives. From fundraising, Christmas parties to garden makeovers and local partnerships, we keep giving back.
