The Resolution Foundation has published a report looking at how disabilities and caring responsibilities affect low-to-middle income Britain.
Key findings include:
- 43 percent of low-to-middle income families include a carer or someone with a disability.
- 34 percent of low-to-middle income adults who provide care for someone they live with report being unable to work because of their caring responsibilities.
- 41 percent of carers who are in paid work have had to reduce their hours to meet their caring responsibilities.
- 10 percent of working-age adults in low-to-middle income families provide at least five hours a week of unpaid care. This compares to 6 percent among those in higher-income families.
The report calls for:
- An extension of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) for low earners.
- Increasing the SSP rate.
- Providing more flexible working rights.
