The government has issued a call for evidence on reforming current fit note procedures. In the future, specialist work and health professionals could have responsibility for issuing them instead of GPs.

The call for evidence is to inform a programme of work announced at the Autumn Statement in 2023 and part of a wider suite of activity to reform the fit note.

The call for evidence will act as a prelude to a full consultation on specific policy proposals which the Government intends to launch later in 2024.

While fit note policy and regulations apply to Great Britain, health is a devolved matter, so the Government is keen to hear a broad range of views from across the UK to inform future policy development.
