This Carers Week, we join others across the UK in recognising the important role unpaid carers play in families, communities and the health and care sector.

Led by Carers UK, this annual campaign raises awareness of caring, highlights the challenges unpaid carers face, and calls for stronger recognition and support.

As part of the campaign, Carers UK has published a new report, Caring About Equality, which exposes the inequalities many carers experience, particularly in relation to their own health, work and finances.

Key findings include:

  • 58% of current and former carers say they face disadvantage in looking after their own health.

  • 39% who’d had to postpone or cancel their own appointments, tests, scans, treatments or therapies said this was because they couldn’t find an appointment at a time they could attend.

  • 50% of current carers report financial disadvantage.

  • 42% say caring has negatively affected their ability to stay in paid work or progress their careers.
