Shropshire community leaders discuss rural care challenges
The event brought together key health care providers, community leaders, local charities, and regional organisations at Acton Scott Heritage Farm for Care in the Countryside, an interactive summit dedicated to addressing the hurdles of delivering social care and support across isolated rural Shropshire communities.
Representatives from over 30 regional organisations attended including local Primary Care Networks (PCNs), Shropshire Council, AGE UK, the National Trust, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Healthwatch Shropshire, to forge collaborative, practical solutions for older residents living in hard-to-reach areas.
Rural isolation, limited public transport, and challenging geography pose severe risks to older adults. To highlight these issues, attendees participated in interactive workshop scenarios mapping out the daily lives, and potential crises, of fictional rural residents facing challenges such as dementia, reduced mobility, and winter power outages.
"Delivering care in rural areas requires a fundamentally different approach than in urban towns," said Hannah MacKechnie, Founder of Radfield Home Care.
"When a sudden winter storm hits or a local service faces delays, isolated individuals can quickly find themselves in severe distress. Today was about bringing every corner of our community together, from rural housing and legal specialists to local charities and health care providers, to encourage communication and collaboration to ensure no one in Shropshire falls through the grid."
During the collaborative sessions, attendees identified key systemic bottlenecks and considered actionable organisational changes. Ideas raised focused on strengthening local transport networks, improving inter-agency communication, and expanding community-based options for older people and their carers.
The afternoon concluded with a guided tour of Acton Scott Heritage Farm, giving attendees an opportunity to continue networking against the backdrop of Shropshire's rich agricultural landscape.
