Scotland: Extending Freedom of Information to care services

This consultation examines whether the Scottish Government should extend Freedom of Information legislation to private or third sector care homes and homecare providers in Scotland.

Freedom of Information legislation usually gives people the right to ask for information from government and public services. Data protection legislation already covers care services, this allows people to ask for information held about themselves. FOI legislation, has a wider scope in terms of what information people can ask for. FOI legislation does not cover care services at the moment.

You can find the consultation here.

The consultation is open until 30 March 2026.
