Prime Minister outlines new tiered lockdown system

The Prime Minister made a statement in the House of Commons on the afternoon of Monday 12 October announcing a tiered lockdown system for England. Different regions will be categorised into the tiers specified. The tier will provide a baseline of the lockdown measures applied in an area. This will be based on the following tiers and will come into place on Wednesday 14 October (summary of the tiers available here):

  • Medium - will cover most of the country and covers existing national measures such as the restriction of meeting in groups no larger than 6 and closure of hospitality at 10pm (detailed guidance here).
  • High - will include additional measures such as those preventing the mixing of households indoors. This will apply in areas where there are existing local restrictions as well as some areas with a rising infection rate (detailed guidance here).
  • Very high - in very high areas some hospitality venues such as pubs and bars will also be closed (detailed guidance here). Liverpool will be in the very high tier (specific guidance for Liverpool here).

An overview of all local restrictions is available here. A list of alert level by region is available here. Postcode checker is here.

The guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable has been updated based on the tier system and there has been an accompanying press release on the tailoring of guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable to the risk level in their locality.

Retail, schools and universities will remain open.
