Consultation: Duty to inform workers of right to join a union
As part of the Make Work Pay Plan, the government has launched a series of public consultations on key measures in the Employment Rights Bill. The Department for Business and Trade has published a series of factsheets sharing further details on the measures included in the Employment Rights Bill.
This consultation covers a new duty on employers to give a written statement to their workers informing them of their right to join a trade union at the start of their employment and at other times. This consultation is seeking views on how to implement this new duty effectively while minimising the burden on employers. The consultation considers how employees should be informed by employers, and how frequently they need to be informed.
The consultation closes at 11:59pm on Thursday, 18 December 2025. Click here to submit a response.
