The Care Provider Alliance responds to the government's Care Workforce Pathway
The Care Provider Alliance (CPA) has welcomed the Government’s plans for the social care workforce.
CPA chair, Dr Jane Townson OBE, said:
“Working in care offers rewarding and challenging careers for many, though wider society does not always recognise this. We therefore welcome the launch of a care career pathway, which will give employers and staff a clearer structure for training, development and career progression. The investment in training and apprenticeships will also help to attract new workers.
“There remains, however, the challenge of pay and terms and conditions of employment for all in care roles. This week’s announcement is critical, but the government must invest more to enable care providers to recruit, reward and keep good staff. The Care Provider Alliance will continue to work with colleagues in government and the wider sector to strengthen support for our workforce.”
The plans being rolled out include:
- The launch of the Care Workforce Pathway: For the first time, there will be a national career structure for the adult social care workforce, covering the breadth and complexity of care.
- Over £50 million of funding for a new qualification: This aims to support up to 37,000 individuals in direct adult social care roles to enrol on the new Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification between June 2024 and March 2025.
- An investment of over £20 million for apprenticeships: Local authorities and adult social care providers will be able to use the money towards training and supervising new social work and nurse apprentices.
- Subsidised training places: An uplift to the Workforce Development Fund aims to expand access to learning and development, creating opportunities for the workforce to become experts in their field or progress into new roles.
- A new digital leadership qualification: This aims to help equip social care leaders and managers with the confidence and capability to lead the implementation and use of technology in the delivery of care.
The Care Provider Alliance is a coalition of 10 associations representing adult social care providers in England. We advocate for the sector and ensure a coordinated response to the major issues that affect it.
The Care Provider Alliance is an informal body. Members take it in turns to lead the CPA and the Chair changes each year.
Membership is of representative associations with a national membership across the whole of England. However, some members also represent services in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
Our members provide care and support to 1.2 million people.
Providers offer a range of services, including residential care, nursing care, homecare, supported living, and extra care housing.
Members support children, adults of working age and older people.
Local authorities, health bodies or private individuals purchase care from providers.
Together, our members employ over 620,000 care workers.
