Professor Sir Mike Richards has resigned as Chair of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) but will continue until a successor takes up the post.

Professor Sir Mike Richards said serving as CQC Chair following his independent review has been a privilege. The organisation has made progress on critical improvements, including establishing specialist sector teams and preparing to communicate the consultation response on the new Assessment Approach.

However, he said turning around the CQC and establishing it as the world’s leading health and care regulator demands a longer-term commitment than he can make. He also believes a new Chair should lead the appointment of a permanent CEO following Sir Julian Hartley’s departure.

Dr Arun Chopra, Interim Chief Executive Officer, thanked Sir Mike for his contribution to rebuilding the CQC and said the organisation commits to delivering on his recommendations.

The Homecare Association continues to advocate for stable leadership at the CQC. We represent your interests directly with CQC through regular engagement with senior officials, including monthly meetings focused on registration, inspection capacity and regulatory approach.
