Northern Ireland announce circuit-breaker lockdown

The Northern Ireland Executive have announced new temporary lockdown measures to "interrupt the spread of the virus and prevent a worsening of the situation."

The measures will come into force on Friday 16 October for four weeks and include a closure of the hospitality sector apart from takeaways (which must close at 11). No overnight stays in a private home unless in a bubble. Closure of close contact services such as hairdressers. No bubbles of more than 10 people from two households and some restrictions on events, sports, weddings, funerals and sale of alcohol.

People are being advised to work from home unless unable to do so; universities and further education are being asked to deliver distance learning where possible and no unnecessary travel should be undertaken.

The half term break for schools will be extended to run from 19-30 October.
