Carer's Week - 5 June to 11 June 

Carers Week is taking place from 5 to 11 June and is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges facing unpaid carers and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities in the UK. Warning of rise in Mpox cases

On 25 May, UKHSA issued a warning that mpox has not gone away, in the light of an increase in cases in the London area.  Those eligible but who had not received 2 doses of the vaccine were encouraged to come forward and book their first dose by 16 June 2023 and their second dose by the end of July 2023: Latest mpox cases a reminder that the infection has not gone away.  Up to 31 December 2022 there were 3,732 confirmed and highly probable mpox cases reported in the UK. In 2023 (up to 24 May 2023) there have been a further 20 cases of mpox reported.

CIPD have produced a People manager guide: Fertility challenges, investigations or treatment which has practical advice for managers on supporting employees experiencing fertility challenges, investigations or treatment and managing the impact on an employee’s mental and physical health.
 

Supporting people with ME

There is information available to assist social care professionals working with people affected by the chronic neurological illness myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.), see for social workers | Action for ME, and a call for better guidelines for social workers, and in particular a greater understanding of how to assess someone with ME for a care package.
 

Health and safety guidance on portable appliance testing and managing health and safety

The Health and Safety Executive have produced frequently asked questions on portable appliance testing (PAT) and a leaflet on maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments. There is also a new online guide for businesses on managing health and safety and guidance on common workplace risks. (Digest 24 May.)
