New national restrictions for four weeks from 5 November

The Prime Minister has announced new national restrictions in England from 5 November to 2 December 2020 to address the rapidly rising number of COVID-19 infections. These restrictions:

- Require people to stay at home, except for specific purposes.
- Prevent gatherings with people they do not live with, except for specific purposes.
- Close certain businesses and venues.

Local COVID-alert levels continue to apply until 5 November and may resume from 3 December, depending on the data. The proposed restrictions will be presented to Parliament for a vote on 4 November.

Prime Minister’s speech Government press release

The furlough scheme will be extended for the month of November, with eligible UK businesses paying only National Insurance and Pensions contributions for their staff, who will be paid at least 80% of their salary up to £2500 a month. The Job Support Scheme has been postponed and business grants will be available to help eligible businesses in England.
