The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has issued important advice on how hot conditions can affect medicines and people who take medication.
The advice explains that hot weather changes how the human body responds to medications, which could impact people managing long-term conditions.
MHRA's advice contains three important tips:
- Keep medicines out of hot cars and direct sunlight. Check the patient information leaflet for storage instructions and remember medical devices can also be affected by heat.
- Drink more water and stay cool if you’re taking diuretics or blood pressure medication - these can increase the risk of dehydration.
- Check if your medicine increases your risk of sunburn. Always read the patient information leaflet or check with your pharmacist to see if sun sensitivity is a side effect.
