Improving Parkinson’s care at home: building confidence in your workforce

Delivering care in people’s homes brings unique challenges. Time pressures, lone working, and limited access to specialist support can make it harder for staff to respond confidently to complex conditions like Parkinson’s. That's why at Parkinson's UK Excellence Network, we've created free learning opportunities to build your knowledge and support you in your important role.

Small differences in care can have a significant impact for people living with Parkinson's. Recognising symptom changes, supporting communication, and making sure medication is given on time can all directly affect a person’s safety, independence and quality of life.

This creates both a challenge and an opportunity for homecare providers: how to equip staff with the knowledge and confidence they need to deliver high-quality, person-centred care in often fast-paced and isolated working environments.

Why Parkinson’s knowledge matters in domiciliary care

Parkinson’s is a complex and progressive neurological condition. No two people experience it in the same way, and symptoms can fluctuate throughout the day.

In a homecare setting, this can present real challenges. Staff may need to adapt quickly to changing needs, support people with mobility or communication difficulties, and manage time-critical medication., These situations can feel difficult to navigate without a basic understanding of Parkinson’s.With the right training, care staff can:

  • better understand how Parkinson’s affects each individual
  • respond more effectively to changes in symptoms
  • support people to maintain independence for longer
  • deliver more confident, compassionate and person-centred care.

A practical, accessible learning offer for homecare teams

Our Parkinson's UK Excellence Network provides free learning designed to support health and care professionals to improve Parkinson’s care in real-world settings.

Our education offer for homecare providers includes:

  • a free 1-hour Introduction to Parkinson’s webinar, delivered to your team at a time that suits you
  • the Foundation Programme, a suite of short, flexible online courses covering key topics such as symptoms, medication and person-centred care
  • practical resources, including guidance specifically for homecare workers to support day-to-day care.

All of our learning is developed in collaboration with health and care professionals and people with lived experience of Parkinson’s:making it both practical and relevant.

Learning from lived experience: our volunteer-led approach

A key part of our offer is our volunteer-led education programme.

Our webinars are delivered by trained volunteer educators who have lived experience of Parkinson’s—either personally or through supporting someone with the condition. Their unique and powerful perspective helps care staff understand not just the clinical aspects of Parkinson’s, but the real-life impact it has on individuals and families.

The aim is simple: to build knowledge, confidence and practical understanding that can be applied immediately in care settings.

Case study: improving medication timing and reducing risk

Training can make a measurable difference to care quality.

Following Parkinson’s UK Excellence Network training, TLC Care Homes implemented a series of simple changes to support time-critical medication, including setting alerts ahead of scheduled doses and improving monitoring processes.

Over a 6-month period:

  • 88% of Parkinson’s medications were administered within 15 minutes of the scheduled time
  • 96% were administered within 30 minutes.

These improvements had a direct impact on residents, including:

  • reduced rigidity and tremors
  • fewer falls
  • lower levels of anxiety.

Overall, this led to safer care, reduced risk, and a clear improvement in quality of life.

Building confidence in your workforce

Feedback from care staff consistently highlights the impact of Parkinson’s training:

“This training will help me take a more person-centred approach, recognising that Parkinson’s affects each individual differently… ensuring care is flexible, respectful and responsive to changing needs.”

For homecare providers, investing in this kind of learning can support:

  • improved care quality and consistency
  • increased staff confidence
  • better outcomes for people living with Parkinson’s.
