Home Affairs Committee: Routes to Settlement

The Home Office has previously announced that it intends to increase the settlement period from five years to ten years, with a points based system allowing people to reduce the new 10 year settlement period based on their social and economic contribution. The Government said that they will consult on this proposed change before the end of the year.

This call for evidence is not the anticipated consultation from the Home Office on the proposed settlement changes - it is a parliamentary inquiry on the same topic.

The Home Affairs Committee has issued a call for evidence to support them to scrutinise the policy decisions of the Home Office. The Inquiry terms of reference include examining evidence on the impact of longer routes to settlement on businesses and employers. They are also interested in how the new system might work and what should count towards 'points' to reduce the settlement period.

This may be of interest to homecare employers with international staff, and international employees in the social care sector.

You can find the call for evidence here: Routes to Settlement - Committees - UK Parliament

The call for evidence is open until 2 December 2025.
