The Government has announced significant reforms to the UK’s legal migration model. Under the proposed changes, care workers, senior care workers and their dependants who came on health and social care visas post Brexit, will be subject to a 15-year qualifying period for settlement. This triples the previous 5-year wait.

Chief Executive of the Homecare Association, Dr Jane Townson OBE, said:

“15 years is too long to wait, and we are at serious risk of losing our valued overseas workforce. These immigration measures are being introduced in a vacuum. The government says it is introducing a Fair Pay Agreement, but this is a long way off, and there is no funding, no workforce strategy, and no plan to deliver the care workers our country needs.”

“We urge the government to consult with the sector. Otherwise, we risk repeating the chaos of 2021, when care shortages increased hospital admissions, delayed hospital discharges and left thousands without the help they needed.”
