The British Geriatrics Society, Age UK, Independent Age, Care England, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the National Care Forum have sent an open letter to Sajid Javid, calling for immediate steps to be taken to address the shortage of care workers to ensure that older people are able to access the care they need when they are discharged from hospital.

The charities are calling for an immediate bonus and pay rise for staff working in social care and for care workers to be added to the Shortage Occupation List.

The move comes as concerns rise that workforce shortages in care services, including homecare, are causing patients who are fit for discharge to be delayed in hospital while care packages are put in place to support them at home.

The Homecare Association's research on the workforce in homecare, which is currently being updated, shows that the majority of providers consider recruitment to be the hardest it has ever been, resulting in most providers being unable to take on some or all of the new care packages they are offered.
